Are They Allowed to Make That Noise?
The Village occasionally hears from residents asking about our noise law, most often because a neighbor is having a party or construction is taking place.
Pomona has a noise law which defines reasonable and unreasonable noise and imposes limits. The law defines and describes noise levels and deals with noise from: animals, construction and demolition, gardening equipment, speakers and sound amplification equipment, and other sources of noise.
Our law sets limits on what time of day construction or demolition noise is allowed. Noise from these activities can take place from 7am to 8pm Monday-Friday and from 9am to 6pm on weekends and legal holidays.
When it comes to speakers and sound amplification equipment, these noises are limited to 8am to 10pm on any day of the year.
Exceptions to our noise law include municipal activities such as snow removal, road work and emergency repairs.
The full details of our noise law may be found HERE.
So, what can be done if there is a violation of our noise law? The simplest solution may be to ask your neighbor to lower the volume, but you can always contact Village Hall during business hours to advise us of a violation, or you can call the Ramapo Police’s non-emergency number (845-357-2400) at any time on the Ramapo portion of our Village and the Haverstraw Police’s non-emergency number (845-354-1500) at any time on the Haverstraw portion of our Village.
Our Code Enforcement staff will investigate any complaints submitted to Village Hall. As a rule, we try to deal gently with these complaints as advising the offender of the details of our noise law usually leads to compliance.
This law is in place to protect the right of our residents to enjoy peace and quiet while at the same time allowing other permitted activities (such as parties and construction) to take place.
I hope you found this information useful. I will be periodically sharing similar information about some of our other laws in the future.
